Although a paradise, Saint-Martin is regularly threatened by cyclones. Here are a few practical tips to help you prepare and ensure the safety of you and your loved ones.

Forecasts and vigilance

Recent years have seen an increase in the frequency and intensity of cyclones. For 2024, forecasts indicate a significant number of tropical storms and major cyclones. It’s crucial to keep abreast of weather forecasts and official alerts. Check the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and Météo France websites regularly for reliable updates.

Keeping an eye on trajectories

Tracking the trajectories of cyclonic systems is essential. A cyclone only becomes a disaster when it makes landfall. Use the online resources of official organizations to track storms.

Warning and information systems

Saint-Martin has warning sirens at Marigot, Quartier d’Orléans and Grand Case. These sirens, along with the FR-Alert warning system, will alert you to any imminent danger. Make sure your cell phone is configured to receive these alerts.

Preparing for the hurricane season

Identify a “safe room “: Choose the most secure room in your home, usually without windows or with minimal openings.

Check your roof and gutters: Repair roofs and clean gutters to prevent water infiltration.

Elevate furniture: Use cinder blocks or other objects to elevate furniture in flood-prone areas.

Freezing and eating: Freeze bottles of water to keep the fridge cold in the event of a power cut, and prepare meals in advance.

Water storage: Store water in clean containers and treat with bleach tablets for sanitary use.

During the cyclone

Consolidate openings: Use plywood boards to protect windows and doors.

Avoid travelling: Once the red alert has been triggered, stay at home and avoid all travel.

Prepare an emergency kit: Make sure you have a battery-powered radio, flashlights, spare batteries, medication, drinking water and non-perishable food.

After the cyclone

Stay informed: Continue to follow the instructions of your local authorities and take care when leaving your home.

Assess the damage: Inspect your home and surroundings for damage and make sure it’s safe before starting repairs.

Help and mutual aid: Help your neighbors and cooperate with rescue teams by not blocking roads or overloading telephone lines.

Preparation and vigilance are the keys to surviving the hurricane season on Saint-Martin. By following these tips and staying informed, you can minimize the risks and protect your family and property.

For further details and to download preparation guides, visit the official websites of the Prefecture and the Collectivité de Saint-Martin. Stay safe and ready for the hurricane season.

Saint-Martin, July 1, 2024 – As Hurricane Beryl approaches the Grenadine Islands, local residents are bracing themselves for harsh weather conditions. The hurricane, currently classified as Category 4 with sustained winds of 215 km/h, is expected to pass between northern Grenada and Cariacou by midday Monday.

          Current situation

At 8:00 am this morning, Beryl’s eye was located near latitude 12.0 North and longitude 60.5 West, moving west-northwest at a speed of 31 km/h. Forecasts indicate that this trajectory is set to continue over the next few days, taking the hurricane across the southern Caribbean arc and into the eastern Caribbean.

The latest readings from NOAA hurricane hunters show maximum sustained winds approaching 130 mph (215 km/h) with higher gusts. Hurricane-force winds extend up to 55 km from the center, and tropical storm-force winds extend up to 205 km. The minimum central pressure is estimated at 959 mb (28.32 inches).

          Preparations in progress

Local authorities in Grenada, Cariacou and neighboring islands have issued alerts and taken measures to ensure the safety of residents. Emergency shelters have been opened, and residents are urged to secure their belongings and follow safety instructions.

Although Saint-Martin is not directly in Beryl’s path, residents are advised to remain informed and vigilant. Indirect effects, such as high waves and strong winds, could be felt in the region.

          Impact and precautions

Beryl is considered a major and extremely dangerous hurricane, with significant risks for the islands in its path. Fluctuations in strength are likely, but the hurricane should remain powerful as it crosses the Windward Islands. A gradual weakening is forecast for mid-week as it reaches the central Caribbean, but Beryl is expected to remain a hurricane nonetheless.

Flights and operations at local airports could be affected. For example, Barbados’ Grantley Adams International Airport has already reported sustained winds of 76 km/h with gusts reaching 111 km/h. Travelers are therefore advised to check the status of their flights before arriving at the airport.

          Background and outlook

The Atlantic hurricane season, which generally runs from June to November, is a time when Caribbean residents need to be particularly vigilant. Beryl is one of the first major hurricanes of this season, and its progress is being closely monitored by meteorologists and local authorities.

Experts at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) continue to monitor Beryl’s progress, providing regular updates on its path and intensity. Residents are encouraged to follow this information and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves.

          Conclusion

Hurricane Beryl, with its impressive strength and well-defined trajectory, poses a serious threat to the islands of Grenada and Cariacou. Although Saint-Martin is outside the direct impact zone, the situation is a reminder of the importance of preparation and vigilance during hurricane season. Stay informed and follow the instructions of local authorities to ensure your safety and that of your loved ones.

For more information and real-time updates, visit the official websites of the weather services and local authorities.

St. Martin, the paradise island of the West Indies, is a popular destination for its sandy beaches, delicious cuisine and warm atmosphere. You are tempted by a trip to this Caribbean jewel and you wonder which airlines offer flights from France?

This article is for you! We will review the different flight options to help you choose the best airline for your trip to St. Maarten.

Airlines serving Saint-Martin from France:

Air France

Air France is one of the main airlines offering direct flights to St. Martin from France.

The company offers scheduled flights from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG) to Princess Juliana airport (SXM), located on the Dutch side of the island.

Flights usually last 9 hours. Air France is known for its in-flight service and comfort, making it an ideal choice for travelers who want a pleasant, non-stop flight.

Corsair

Corsair is another French airline that serves Saint-Martin. The company offers direct flights between Paris-Orly airport (ORY) and Princess Juliana airport (SXM).

Corsair flights are seasonal and generally available during the peak tourist season, which runs from December to April. Flights are similar in duration to those of Air France, about 9 hours.

Corsair offers value and service for travelers looking for a direct option to St. Maarten.

KLM

Although KLM is a Dutch airline, it also offers flights to St. Martin from France, with a stopover in Amsterdam.

Flights depart from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and land at Princess Juliana Airport (SXM) after a stopover at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS).

Flights with KLM usually last between 12 and 14 hours, depending on the length of the stopover. If you don’t mind a stopover, KLM is an interesting option with excellent service on board.

Air Caraïbes

Air Caraïbes also offers flights to St. Martin from France, with a stopover in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe. Flights depart from Paris-Orly Airport (ORY) and arrive at Grand-Case Espérance Airport (SFG) on the French side of the island.

Although the total flight time is longer due to the stopover, Air Caraïbes is an affordable option for travelers wishing to discover the Caribbean at a competitive price.

Conclusion:

There are several options for travelers wishing to travel to St. Martin from France. Airlines such as Air France and Corsair offer direct flights, while KLM and Air Caraïbes offer flights with a stopover.

Each airline has its own advantages in terms of comfort, service and price. It’s important to compare options and consider your personal preferences for budget and comfort before making your choice.

Please keep in mind that flight prices may vary depending on the season, promotions and booking period. It is therefore recommended to book in advance and to watch for special offers to get the best rates. No matter which airline you choose, St. Maarten awaits you with its beautiful beaches, rich culture and delicious cuisine.

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable experience on this Caribbean island paradise!

St. Martin, a Caribbean island paradise, attracts visitors from around the world with its white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and rich cultural heritage. But what sets St. Martin apart from other tourist destinations is its unique status as an island shared between two sovereign nations: France and the Netherlands. In this article, we will explore the particularities of the island’s status, examining what is an overseas collectivity (COM) for the French part and the status of autonomous territory for the Dutch part.

I. Saint-Martin: an island shared between two nations

A. The French part: an overseas collectivity

The northern part of the island of Saint-Martin belongs to France and is officially known as the Collectivité de Saint-Martin. Since the constitutional reform of 2003, Saint-Martin has been an overseas collectivity (COM), replacing the former status of overseas department (DOM) and overseas region (ROM). The COMs are governed by Article 74 of the French Constitution (1) and enjoy greater autonomy than the former DOM-ROMs.

B. The Dutch part: an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Sint Maarten, the southern part of the island, is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Since the dissolution of the Federation of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, Sint Maarten has become a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, along with the Netherlands, Aruba and Curaçao. The status of Sint Maarten is governed by the Statute of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (2), which guarantees a large degree of autonomy to the territory, although it remains under the sovereignty of the King of the Netherlands.

II. The particularities of the statutes of Saint-Martin and Sint Maarten

A. Cross-border cooperation

Despite their different statuses, the two parts of the island of St. Maarten maintain close cooperation in various areas, such as security, public services and tourism. The two sides also share an international airport, Princess Juliana Airport (3), which is located on the Dutch side but serves both parts of the island. In addition, there are no border controls between the two parties, which allows for the free movement of people and goods.

B. Political and legal differences

Both parts of the island operate with their own governments and legal systems. The French part is headed by a president of the community, while the Dutch part is governed by a prime minister. Furthermore, the French part follows the French legal system, while the Dutch part follows the Dutch legal system.

Closing remarks

The unique character of the island of St. Martin offers visitors and residents a rich and diverse cultural experience. The political and legal differences between the two sides, as well as their cross-border cooperation, illustrate the ability of nations to work together to preserve and promote their common heritage, while respecting their differences.

The island of Saint-Martin, located in the Caribbean, has a tropical climate. The seasons are generally divided into two main periods:

The dry season: This season generally extends from December to April. During this period, temperatures are cooler and precipitation is less frequent. This is the most popular time of year for tourists, as the weather is usually sunny and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 22 to 30 degrees Celsius (72 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit).

The rainy season: This season extends from May to November and is characterized by slightly higher temperatures and increased rainfall. Temperatures generally range from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius (77 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit). Despite the showers, there is still plenty of sunshine, and the rain tends to fall as short, intense showers, rather than steady rain.

It is important to note that the
  hurricane season
in the Caribbean is also between June and November, with a peak of activity in August and September. Although hurricanes do not directly affect St. Maarten every year, it is possible for the island to be affected by tropical storms or hurricanes during this period.

Dear visitors and friends of the island of Saint-Martin,

We are delighted to welcome you to our site and to share with you interesting information about our beautiful island. Today, we will discuss a lesser known, but equally fascinating aspect of St. Martin: its demographic evolution through time.

The island of Saint-Martin, shared between France and the Netherlands, has had a rich and varied history. This unique island has seen its population evolve over the centuries from a pre-Columbian Native American population to a cultural mix of European settlers, African slaves and immigrant workers.

At the beginning of the 17th century, the island was populated by Amerindians, especially the Tainos and Caribs. European colonization began in 1631 with the presence of the Dutch, followed by the French in 1648. It was at this time that the island was divided into two parts, the French part, St. Martin, and the Dutch part, Sint Maarten. The island’s population began to grow with the arrival of European settlers and African slaves, who worked on the sugar and cotton plantations.

In the 19th century, the abolition of slavery led to a change in the social and demographic structure of the island. Former slaves and immigrant workers began to integrate into the local population, contributing to the cultural diversity of St. Martin.

In the 20th century, the island experienced rapid population growth, mainly due to the rise of tourism and economic development. Many workers from neighboring islands, Europe, North America and Latin America have moved to St. Maarten to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the tourism industry.

In 2021, the population of the island of Sint Maarten was approximately 77,000, divided between the French part, Sint Maarten, and the Dutch part, Sint Maarten. This multicultural and cosmopolitan population is an asset for the island, offering a wealth of traditions, languages and cuisines that make St. Martin a unique and attractive tourist destination.

In conclusion, the island of St. Maarten has experienced impressive population growth over the centuries, from a Native American population to a diverse and multicultural population. We are proud of this history and the cultural heritage it represents, and we look forward to sharing this richness with all who come to visit our beautiful island.

Feel free to explore our site to learn more about the history, culture and activities that St. Martin has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you and showing you the hidden treasures of our island paradise.
