Under SXM is an underwater sculpture park in Little Bay: more than 300 sculptures celebrating the history and culture of Sint Maarten, set about 15 feet down and designed as an artificial reef for marine life. The offer bookable on Viator is The Original snorkel tour, run by the people who designed, built and own the park.
You meet the team at Bobby’s Marina in Philipsburg, by the two blue sculptures next to The Greenhouse restaurant, 10 minutes before departure. The marina is a 10 to 15-minute walk from the cruise terminal. A short 10-minute boat ride takes you from Great Bay to Little Bay, where you get your snorkel gear and a safety float.
In the water, your guide swims with the group, shares the stories behind the design and installation of the sculptures and points out the fish and sea life around them. You simply float above the scenes for about an hour on site, before the boat brings you back to the marina. The full tour lasts about 2 hours.
Tours leave at 9:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Adults (13 and over) pay USD 49 and children 3 to 12 about USD 29. Underwater photos can be bought on board. The tour is not recommended for non-swimmers, and there is no pickup at the park itself in Little Bay.
