A beachfront base for enjoying Maho differently

Tortuga Maho is one of the most useful places on Maho Beach when you want food, beach time, cocktails and plane spotting without moving around. The restaurant sits on Rhine Road, right by the water, with views of the turquoise sea, Saba in the distance, aircraft approaching over the beach and Caribbean sunsets later in the day.

You can start here at breakfast. The official menu lists Caribbean Sunrise, Maho Sunrise, Tortuga Sunrise, omelettes, pancakes, French toast, paninis and fresh fruit. Around lunch, it becomes an easy beach stop with fish bites, wings, nachos, lobster salad, poke bowl, jerk chicken bowl, steak frites, burgers, wraps, paninis and fresh catch depending on availability.

In the evening, Tortuga is more than a quick beach bar. The dinner menu adds shareable starters, tuna tartar, saltfish fritters, lobster pasta, rasta pasta, coconut mango shrimp, ribeye, lobster tail, pizzas and simpler options for mixed groups. The bar is a major reason to stay: signature cocktails, frozen drinks, mocktails, wine and beer, with an afternoon happy hour. Beach beds and umbrellas are available for rent, so the place can work as a base for several hours on Maho.

Practical tip: come during the day if plane spotting is your priority, then stay for sunset when the sky is clear. Maho Beach is small and can get crowded when larger aircraft arrive; keep a safe distance from the airport fence and jet blast. Tortuga works well for families and groups, but book ahead if you want a table with the best view. The official menu notes that 15% may be added for parties of 6 or more.
