It's one of the first questions travelers ask when arriving in Saint Martin: should I rent a car? The island is small, but it's full of beautiful beaches, renowned restaurants, and picturesque villages spread all over the territory.
Why rent a car here
If you plan to move around often, change beaches every day, or explore both sides of the island, renting a car quickly becomes very advantageous. However, for occasional trips or if you mainly stay around your hotel, taxis remain an excellent, convenient, and comfortable option.
One of the great advantages of driving in Saint Martin: there is no physical border between the French and Dutch sides. No customs, no checkpoint, no paperwork. You drive from one side to the other without even noticing. One island, two vibes, zero hassle.
Where to pick up your vehicle
Most travelers arrive via Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), located on the Dutch side. That's where the main rental agencies are concentrated. Pickup is generally very smooth, with counters right in the terminal or just steps from the exit.
If you land at Grand Case Esperance Airport (GCG) on the French side, major brands also have counters there. The atmosphere is often more peaceful, which is ideal for picking up your car quietly, especially if you're staying in Grand Case, Orient Bay, or Anse Marcel.
The agencies we recommend
We have selected four internationally recognized brands, offering proven standards of quality, transparency, and customer service.
Sixt is probably the most visible brand on the island, with three pickup points: Princess Juliana Airport, Grand Case Airport and the Philipsburg cruise terminal. Their fleet is recent, SUVs are available year-round, and the service lives up to what you'd expect from a premium brand. It's the ideal choice if you want a vehicle in excellent condition, no questions asked.

If you're coming from the US or Canada, Alamo is a name you already know. Their counter is right inside the Princess Juliana Airport terminal, at Booth 1. No shuttle needed, no searching around. Their strong suit: a large selection of SUVs and family vehicles, with a smooth, fast rental process. A safe bet.
View Alamo offersDollar is perhaps the most popular rental agency among locals and island regulars. The value for money is excellent, the service is fast, and local reviews are consistently positive. Their office is on Airport Road, just steps from the airport. If you're looking for a reliable economy car or an affordable SUV, this is probably your best bet.

For European travelers, it's a reassuring familiar name. The vehicle range is wide, and you can drop off at a different location from pickup, which is handy if your return flight leaves from a different airport.

What budget to expect?
Generally, expect to pay between $30 and $50 per day for a small economy car, and $60 to $100 for an SUV, depending on the season. Rates tend to rise during high season (December to April). Our advice for the best prices: book several weeks before your arrival rather than at the counter on the day.
