Health tips for travelers

  • Travel insurance

Get insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation before you leave. Dutch-side healthcare follows US pricing: an ER visit can cost several hundred dollars.

  • European Health Insurance Card

The EHIC is not valid in Saint Martin (including the French side). You must pay upfront and request reimbursement from your insurer when you return home.

  • Sun protection

Apply SPF 50 sunscreen every 2 hours. The tropical sun is much stronger than in northern latitudes, even on cloudy days.

  • Mosquitoes

Use repellent (DEET or IR3535), especially at dusk. Mosquitoes can transmit dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.

  • Drinking water

Tap water is safe to drink, but if you have a sensitive stomach, stick to bottled water.
