Craving freedom and thrills? Scooters and ATVs are fantastic ways to explore Saint Martin at your own pace. Less bulky than a car, more fun than a taxi, they let you cruise the island's roads, discover hidden beaches and enjoy the Caribbean breeze on your face.
Why rent a scooter or ATV
Saint Martin is a compact island, making it an ideal playground for two-wheelers. On a scooter, you easily navigate through Marigot or Philipsburg traffic, always find a parking spot and fully enjoy the tropical climate. ATVs add an adventure dimension. Some rental companies even offer guided tours that cross both sides of the island.
Just like with a car, there is no physical border between the French and Dutch sides. You can cross freely from one side to the other, whether you're on a 50cc scooter or a 400cc ATV. It's one of the great charms of this unique island.
Scooter or ATV: which one to choose?
A scooter (50cc to 160cc) is perfect for daily commutes. It's economical, easy to drive and parks anywhere. Ideal for going to the beach, shopping or reaching a restaurant in the evening. The 50cc models are accessible without a motorcycle license.
An ATV/quad (300cc to 400cc) is more geared towards adventure and discovery. Powerful and stable, it lets you cover the entire island with ease, including the steep roads leading to the most beautiful viewpoints. Several rental companies offer guided tours of 3 to 4 hours, with photo stops and lunch included.

Our practical tips
License and minimum age. A 50cc scooter can be driven with a basic driving license. For a 125cc, a motorcycle license or training certificate may be required. For an ATV, a car license is generally sufficient. Minimum age varies by rental company (18 to 25 years).
Helmet required. Wearing a helmet is mandatory for both driver and passenger. Most rental companies provide 1 to 2 helmets with the rental.
Deposit. Expect a security deposit (generally between $500 and €2,000 depending on the vehicle). It is refunded when the vehicle is returned in good condition.
Road safety. Saint Martin's roads can be narrow and hilly. Drive carefully, especially in the rain. Both the French and Dutch sides drive on the right. No change when crossing the border.
Book ahead. In high season (December to April), vehicles go fast. Don't wait until the last minute to book, especially for ATVs and buggies.
