Philipsburg Beach (Great Bay)
The beach in the heart of the capital
Philipsburg Beach, better known as Great Bay Beach, is the long stretch of white sand that runs along the heart of the Dutch-side capital. It captivates with a rare mix of Caribbean scenery (turquoise water, sheltered bay, palm trees) and an urban vibe with everything within arm's reach.
Great Bay Beach stretches for roughly two to three kilometers along the coastline. The sand is soft and the slope into the sea is gradual, making swimming pleasant and accessible. Facing the beach, the bay opens into a wide panorama where you can spot boats at anchor and the bustling port activity, giving the place a distinctive "island life" charm.
What truly makes this beach unique is its Boardwalk: the seaside promenade that runs along much of the bay. It features a great concentration of restaurants, bars and terraces with direct views of the water, perfect for alternating between swimming, a lunch break and watching the sunset. Philipsburg is also a major shopping spot, with commercial streets just steps from the waterfront. Great Bay Beach is therefore ideal for combining beach time with a city outing.
The beach is also very popular with cruise ship passengers, as it sits close to the port area. Water taxis make it easy to reach the town and the beach from the cruise terminal.
