Lovers Beach

Between Galisbay and Friar's Bay, northwest coast of Saint Martin

Lovers Beach, the tiny cove you should not underestimate

Lovers Beach, known in French as Plage des Amoureux, is one of the smallest beaches in Saint Martin. It is hidden in a rocky cove between Galisbay and Friar's Bay on the northwest coast. Its name mostly comes from its size: the sandy space is so limited that it can quickly feel made for two people only.

It is an unusual and photogenic spot, but not a practical beach for a classic beach day. There are no restaurants, loungers, showers or lifeguards. The shoreline changes with swell and sand levels; on some days, the cove may feel more rocky than comfortable.

Access requires real caution. Depending on trail condition, vegetation and sea state, the descent can be difficult, slippery or hard to follow. Several local sources describe it as an adventure outing, sometimes more realistic by sea, kayak or boat in calm conditions, than as a casual walk.

Do not go in flip-flops, alone, with young children or in rough seas. Wear proper shoes, bring water, keep your hands free for the descent and check the weather. If the path looks closed, overgrown or unsafe, turn back: Friar's Bay, Happy Bay or Grand Case are much safer alternatives.

Lovers Beach is therefore best seen as a curiosity for careful travelers, secret-cove seekers and photographers. It deserves an honest description: beautiful in the right conditions, but tiny, facility-free and not always accessible.
