Le Galion Beach
Le Galion, Saint Martin's family lagoon
Le Galion Beach is one of Saint Martin's best family options when conditions are good. Located on the east coast, south of Orient Bay, it forms a shallow lagoon protected by the reef. The water shelves gently, making swimming easier for children and visitors who prefer to avoid waves.
Le Galion does not feel like the beach-club side of Orient Bay. Come for a simple day by the water, open space, wide bay views and a more local atmosphere. In calm seas, the lagoon is pleasant for paddling, relaxed swimming, beginner paddleboarding or a short look near the reef with mask and snorkel, staying close and sensible.
The beach is also known for gentle board sports. Depending on wind and which operators are active, it can suit windsurfing, kayaking or other light watersports. Facilities have changed over the years and vary by season; do not rely completely on restaurants, loungers or restrooms being available.
Access is by Route du Galion from the Orient Bay / French Quarter side. Parking is usually informal near the beach. After heavy rain or if the road is rough, drive slowly and avoid blocking access tracks.
Before planning a full beach day, check two key points: wind and sargassum, which can affect this Atlantic-facing coast. The beach is not always lifeguarded. Bring water, sun protection, water shoes if useful and take all trash back with you.
