St. Maarten Carnival 2027: Come, experience life in Philipsburg

About

From Thursday, April 15 to Monday, May 3, 2027, Philipsburg hands itself over to St. Maarten Carnival, the biggest cultural celebration on the Dutch side. The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF), now led by president Marie Gittens, has released a schedule that returns to the usual length after the extended 55th-anniversary season of 2026. The invitation is the same as ever: "Come, experience life!"

Everything revolves around the Jocelyn Arndell Festival Village, Philipsburg's Carnival Village, named after the man who brought the idea home from St. Thomas in 1970. Rows of food and drink booths face a main stage that hosts competitions, queen shows and concerts night after night. The 2027 lineup counts thirteen nights built around local culture, six international concert nights, three parades and four jump-ups.

The big days on the road:
J'ouvert, Tuesday, April 27, 4 a.m.: music trucks pull the crowd through the streets of Philipsburg before sunrise. April 27 is also King's Day, a public holiday in Sint Maarten.
Grand Carnival Parade, Friday, April 30: the costumed troupes take over town on Carnival Day, another public holiday. In 2026 the parade set off around 10 a.m. from L.B. Scott Road, ran along Front Street and finished at Festival Village.
Lighted Labor Day Parade, Saturday, May 1: what used to be the second day of the Grand Parade is now an illuminated parade, made permanent after it drew big crowds in 2026.
Closing, Monday, May 3: Carnival ends the traditional way, with the burning of King Momo, the straw figure who presides over the festivities.
