On 15 October 2026, Spring Garden in the hills of Colombier (French side) reaches a long-planned milestone: the official opening of Heritage Experience. After months of soft openings, the site widens its doors for a first full season built around Saint Martin’s history, traditions, food and storytelling.
The project is led by Ghyslaine Richardson, Helene Hanson and Cecil Nicholas, who have spent roughly fifteen years shaping a place where heritage is not only read about but walked through, tasted and performed. Visitors move through the landscape, hear local stories and meet characters drawn from an earlier chapter of village life.
A journey that starts with a conch shell
The visit begins with the unmistakable sound of a conch shell, blown to mark the start. Guests then walk the Spring Garden grounds while learning how plants and trees once supplied food, medicine and daily needs. The land itself is part of the interpretation, not a backdrop.
Live theatre follows. The signature piece, “Love in Spring Garden,” brings traditional village life to the stage through characters, dialogue and humour. The script grew with the wider Heritage Experience vision; Clara Reyes worked with the cast to move the material from page to performance. The production has been selected as the 2027 Cultural Icon by the St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association (SHTA), just ahead of the grand opening.
Heritage you can taste
Food anchors the second half of the story. Soft-opening coverage describes tastings of arrowroot, salt fish and stewed chicken with journey cake baked on site in a stone oven, plus a cassava bread demonstration, drinks such as sorrel and guavaberry, and local sweets. The oven’s aroma and hands-on prep are meant to sit beside the walk and the play as one continuous experience.
During soft openings, many guests struggled to name a single favourite moment: landscape, cuisine and reenactment work together rather than as separate stops. Richardson and Hanson have written other plays over the years, with plans to bring additional cultural and theatrical events to the same Spring Garden venue through the season.
