Oualichi Rhum
A rum bar among barrels and bottles in Cul-de-Sac
Oualichi Rhum is a rum bar at 90 Rue de Cul-de-Sac, in the neighborhood where boats leave for Pinel Island. Its name comes from Oualichi, the name the Amerindians gave to the island of Saint Martin. Inside, the mood is warm: wooden walls, rum barrels, soft lighting and shelves lined with bottles from all over the Caribbean.
Rum is, of course, what the place is all about. The list brings together selected rums, agricole rums from Guadeloupe and Marie-Galante, aged cuvées and a few limited editions, to try by the glass or during the bar's tastings and masterclasses. Wine lovers are not left out, and cigar fans can pair their glass with a cigar on the terrace.
For food, Oualichi Rhum focuses on a brasero grill and sharing plates, in the spirit of a long, relaxed aperitif. The bar also has a pool table and hosts afterworks and themed evenings, with the program posted on its Instagram account. A shop inside the bar sells miniature and full-size bottles, a nice way to bring a taste of the island home.
The bar is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to midnight, and closed on Sunday and Monday. It makes a good late-afternoon stop after a trip to Pinel Island or a swim at Orient Bay, just a few minutes away by car. Drink responsibly: plan a designated driver or a taxi for the ride back.
