Plum Bay
Plum Bay, the wild side of Baie aux Prunes
Plum Bay, locally known as Baie aux Prunes, sits in the Terres Basses area on the far western side of French Saint Martin. It is a quiet residential beach, far less busy than the island's best-known seaside spots. Visitors come for the peaceful setting, pale sand, clear colors and late-afternoon light.
The atmosphere is very different from Orient Bay or Grand Case: no rows of loungers, no permanent beach bar, no music. The beach keeps a natural feel, with public access points between private properties. Respect gates, gardens and residential paths: the beach is public, but the surrounding neighborhood is quiet.
Swimming depends heavily on the sea. In calm conditions, Plum Bay can offer beautiful turquoise water and a relaxed place to spend time on the sand. When west or northwest swell comes in, the shore break gets stronger and waves may crash close to the beach. It can then attract surfers, but it is not ideal for children or nervous swimmers.
Plum Bay is also a good sunset beach. In late afternoon, arrive with time to spare: parking near the access points is limited and informal. Bring water, shade, sun protection, light shoes for sandy paths and a bag to take your trash back with you.
Choose Plum Bay if you want a quiet, photogenic beach with no facilities. For easier swimming and more services nearby, combine the area with Baie Rouge or Baie Longue depending on the day's conditions.
