Pinel Island Beach
Pinel Island, the turquoise lagoon of the Nature Reserve
Pinel Island (Îlet Pinel) is a small uninhabited islet about 500 metres off the village of Cul-de-Sac, in north-eastern Saint Martin. The whole islet lies inside the National Nature Reserve and offers one of the gentlest swims on the island: a sheltered lagoon, crystal-clear water and a very gradual white-sand bottom, perfect for children and beginner swimmers.
The main beach faces west toward Cul-de-Sac and is protected from prevailing swells by the islet's hill and the outer coral reef. This is where the ferry lands and where the two beach restaurants are located: Karibuni Beach (Caribbean cuisine, wood-fired lobster) and Yellow Beach (more casual). Both rent loungers and umbrellas by the day.
Pinel is one of the best snorkeling spots in Saint Martin. A marked underwater trail starts to the right of the jetty and runs along the coral heads: expect parrotfish, sergeant-majors, blue tangs and the occasional green turtle. For safety, stay on the beach side of the yellow buoys - the outer reef opens onto stronger currents.
On land, a short 20-minute trail climbs to the summit (38 m) and drops down to the two wild Atlantic-facing beaches on the east side. The 360° panorama takes in Orient Bay, Tintamarre, Anguilla and Saint Barthélemy. Bring closed shoes, water and a hat: there is no shade on the ridge.
Boat shuttle from the Cul-de-Sac jetty (5-minute crossing): continuous departures every 30 minutes from 10:00 to 16:30, roughly €12 / $12 round trip per adult, reduced rate for children. Last return at 16:30: after that, the islet becomes deserted again and overnight mooring is forbidden. You can also paddle or kayak across (300 m, calm water in the morning).
Protected area: no fishing, no jet-skis, no picking or collecting coral or shells. Reef-safe mineral sunscreen is recommended. Take your trash with you - there are no public bins on the islet.
