Cupecoy Beach

Cupecoy, Lowlands, Sint Maarten (Dutch side, near the French border)

Cupecoy, hidden coves under the ochre cliffs

Cupecoy Beach is one of the most photogenic beaches on the island, in the far south-west of the Dutch side, just before the French border. The setting is unique on Saint Martin: white-to-golden sand sheltered by ochre sandstone cliffs carved by the waves into honeycombs, arches and small caves. Depending on swell and season, the long beach breaks up into a series of small near-private coves.

Access from the road is by several stairs cut into the cliff, starting from the Cupecoy condos and restaurants (Rainbow Beach Club, The Cliff, Porto Cupecoy). The steps are not always in great shape: walk down carefully, especially in wet weather, and hold children's hands. Once below, you move from one cove to the next along the shoreline, which is not always possible at high tide or in strong swell.

Sand level varies a lot from one season to the next: wide and gorgeous in calm conditions, sometimes very narrow after a big winter swell. The sea is more open here than at Maho or Mullet, so expect regular waves and possible currents; swimming is fine in summer or calm weather but stay alert in big surf. No marker buoys.

Cupecoy is also Saint Martin / Sint Maarten's reference clothing-optional beach. The practice is concentrated in the western coves (toward the border). It's tolerated and routine: be respectful, do not photograph other beachgoers, and move to the family-friendly coves if you prefer. On land, the cliffs and caves are fragile: do not climb on them.

Sunset: Cupecoy faces due west and offers one of the best sunsets on the island. Many visitors come up at the end of the afternoon, have dinner nearby (Sunset Cafe / The Cliff) and walk back down for the golden light on the cliffs.

On site, limited or no services on the sand: depending on the season, a beach bar (Rainbow Beach Bar) may rent loungers and parasols. Bring water, a towel, reef-safe mineral sunscreen, and shoes for the steps. Parking is limited along the road: arrive early on weekends and before sunset. Keep an eye on your belongings - the beach is isolated, closed in by the cliffs.
